Technological options for decarbonizing both energy & heavy industrial sectors X

In order to limit the effects of climate change, the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the energy sector & the heavy industry sectors need to be reduced. Significant reductions can be achieved by using appropriate technologies and policies.

The decarbonization of the energy sector has been the subject of research for several years, gaining increased attention recently. It is commonly acknowledged that the most obvious way to achieve decarbonization is the use of RE. Therefore, many countries already use a continuously increasing share of their renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal or hydro energy to generate electricity.

Heavy industry makes products that are responsible for nearly 40% of global carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Steel, cement, and chemicals are the top three emitting industries and are among the most difficult to decarbonize.

• Steelmaking uses coal both as a source of heat and as part of the chemical process of converting iron ore to elemental iron. Both of these uses produce carbon dioxide.
• Cement productionalso releases CO₂ as part of the chemical process, in this case when limestone is heated to very high temperature to produce calcium oxide “clinker,” the cement’s primary component.
• The chemical industryuses coal, oil, and natural gas as feedstocks that are transformed into final products, not just sources of energy.

These industries and others share technical challenges in common, including process emissions of carbon dioxide, the need for high heat, and use or potential use of hydrogen.

من أجل تقليل آثار التغير المناخي فلابد من تقليل نسب انبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون الناتجة من الطاقة والصناعات الثقيلة ولا يتم ذلك إلا من خلال استخدام الوسائل التكنولوجية والسياسات المناسبة.

خضع قطاع الطاقة للكثير من الأبحاث في السنوات الأخيرة وخاصة في مجال تقليل معدل انبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون. وقد لجأت العديد من الشركات مؤخراً لاستخدام مصادر الطاقة المتجددة مثل الرياح والطاقة الشمسية والمياه لتوليد الكهرباء.

ويُعرف أن الصناعات الثقيلة مسؤولة عن ٤٠٪؜ من معدل انبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون ، وتُعد مصانع الحديد والأسمنت والكيماويات هي أعلى ثلاث مصادر لانبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون وتمثل أصعب المجالات التي يمكن فيها التقليل من آثار الكربون.

• صناعة الحديد تعتمد صناعة الحديد والصلب على الفحم كمصدر للحرارة وجزء من العلية الكيماوية لصناعة الصلب ومثل هذا الاستخدام يؤدي إلى انبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون.
• صناعة الأسمنتتتضمن العمليات الكيماوية لإنتاج الأسمنت انبعث كميات كبيرة من ثاني أكسيد الكربون نتيجة معدلات عالية من الحرارة لإنتاج أكسيد الكالسيوم كعنصر أساسي في صناعة الأسمنت.
• الصناعات الكيماوية تعمد الصناعات الكيماوية بشكل أساسي على استخدام الفحم والزيوت والغاز الطبيعي وكلها تؤدي إلى انبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون.

وكل هذه الصناعات تمثل تحدياً كليراً حيث ينتج عنها انبعاث كميات كبيرة من ثاني أكسيد الكربون نتيجة للحاجة لمصدر للحرارة بالإضافة إلى استخدام الهيدروجين.
